Fatbirder's Top 1000 Birding Websites

USA – Arizona

Deserts & Canyons

18 April to 4 May 2017

Leader: Paul Rogers

Maximum of eight clients.

2017 Cost: £4,799 single room supplement £690

We are happy to repeat one of our more popular tours to this exciting state. There will be superlative birding in the deserts and mountains of Arizona, where there will also be the opportunity to appreciate the ecology of this unique area before heading north to the dramatic scenery of the Grand Canyon. Greater Roadrunners chase lizards across the desert floors, Black-chinned Hummingbirds buzz around feeders like bees, Acorn Woodpeckers drill holes in road-side telegraph poles and Painted Redstarts flit in the dappled light of the oakwoods, all adding to a mosaic of memories. We visit at a time of year when the desert is still quite cool and many of the resident birds are nesting. There is also the added attraction of birds migrating north to their breeding grounds, plus a few wintering species still lingering before they move to their nesting territories. We will explore the Sonora Desert with its huge Saguaro Cacti and prickly Mesquite bushes and search for Pyrrhuloxias and Phainopeplas. In the wooded canyons we will look for colourful wood-warblers and trogons, whilst on the rim of the Grand Canyon we will stand in awe of the abyss carved by the Colorado River below. This will be Ornitholidays’ 10th visit to this area.
