Taiwan

Island Endemics & Autumn Migrants

12 October to 24 October 2017

Leaders: David Walsh and Kuen-Dar Chiang

Maximum of 12 clients.

2017 Cost £3,999 single room supplement £490

When the Portuguese first saw this subtropical island, situated just 100 miles off mainland China, they called it Ilha Formosa, or the ‘beautiful island.’ Taiwan has a spine of mountains along its centre the east coast is rugged, while the west side is flat and fertile with many areas put over to agriculture, including fish farms and rice paddies. The country is heavily industrialised around the major cities, but there is also some excellent primary forest as well as fast-flowing rivers and coastal marshes, protected by an extensive network of national parks. Taiwan’s bird list now exceeds 600, including at least 22 endemic species (depending on whose taxonomy is followed) and many more distinctive subspecies. The central mountains contain most of these, and we will spend much of our time here, where the scenery is glorious and the air fresh. We will search for star attractions such as the breathtaking Swinhoe’s and Mikado Pheasants and the dazzling Taiwan Blue Magpie. We expect to see most of the endemic birds, and many other resident species in addition, the timing of our tour means that we can enjoy autumn migrants too, including raptors heading across the sea from the south of the island and passerines arriving in the north. We also spend a day near Tainan, hoping to find the first returning Black-faced Spoonbills plus a host of interesting waders.

David Walsh has travelled extensively in Asia, and visited Taiwan in autumn 2015, whilst Kuen-Dar Chiang is one of the island’s most experienced bird guides. Travel with David and Kuen-Dar to find out why Taiwan is such a popular destination, with great birds, fabulous scenery and wonderful food. This will be Ornitholidays fifth tour to Taiwan.
